Create a PRETTY Bedroom in 5 easy Steps! (Plus how to add eco-friendly and green elements to not only your guest room, but throughout the house)

CREATE A PRETTY GUEST BEDROOM IN 5 STEPS

Country floral prints, navy blue accents, a variety of textures, French-style furniture and homey accessories combine to create a gorgeous guest bedroom. Here's how to achieve this look in 5 easy steps:

Add an accent colour and texture

An all-neutral guest room can seem soulless, so use a deep accent colour and plenty of pattern and texture. Try a trailing floral wallpaper on the wall behind the bed, then add complementary quilted toile cushions, along with a cosy knitted cushion and throw in a darker denim blue.

Create a place for your guests to sit

Add occasional seating, such as this petite dressing bench, which fits neatly at the foot of the bed. If you have more space, you could invest in a cozy armchair or chaise lounge, or go for a storage footstool where you can keep spare bed linen and towels.

Make it symmetrical

Update bedside tables with a pair of eye-catching lamps - this will 'frame' the bed and means both sleeping partners can read at night. A pair of simple oval mirrors mounted on the wall on either side of the bed draws attention to the symmetry, and works better than pictures against a busy patterned feature wallpaper.

Buy fresh flowers

A vase of flowers ties in well with the floral wallpaper and makes a room feel lived in, adding a thoughtful touch that your guests will appreciate. A great cheat is to buy a faux-flower arrangement that lasts all year - just remember to dust it regularly!

Add homey touches

Set out a tray with a teapot, kettle and cups so visitors can enjoy a cup of tea in bed in the morning. Layer up cushions, plus quilts and throws at the foot of the bed so guests stay warm on chilly winter nights. A few favorite books and magazines will also make them feel at home.

ECO FRIENDLY BEDROOM DECORATING IDEAS...AND ECO IDEAS IN GENERAL:

When it comes to decorating your bedroom, you don't have to sacrifice health for design. There is a large variety of eco-friendly and sustainable bedroom decor items available, from textiles to furniture to paint. Enhancing a bedroom with green, non-toxic items is particularly important if a family member suffers from chemical sensitivities.

Non-Toxic Paint
Infuse a bedroom with healthy dose of color by using non-toxic paint. Choose low-odor, no-VOC (volatile organic compound), which delivers full color and durability with reduced off-gassing. Soft green or lavender paint shades will give the space a soothing, spa-like ambiance. Other nature-inspired colors include sky blue, grass green, pomegranate red and sunny yellow.

Bamboo Items
Give a bedroom a natural vibe using stylish bamboo decor items. Bamboo, a renewable resource, is used to make sustainable furniture and textiles. Accentuate bedroom flooring with large or small bamboo rugs, or a combination of both. Natural bamboo rugs will infuse the bedroom with a rustic flair, while rugs enhanced with low-impact dyes will give the space a pop of color. Place a large rug under the bed to create a room focal point, or set a small rug under a vanity table or night stand. For a cohesive look, hang bamboo window blinds.

Potted Green Plants
Potted green plants will cleanse and purify bedroom air while adding a fresh look to the space. Fill in empty bedroom corners with tall plants planted in rustic terracotta pots. If your room has an island or beach-inspired decor theme, choose tropical foliage. Small plants displayed in hand-painted clay pots will give the room an artistic look.

Organic Fabrics
Design a earth-friendly, comfortable personal haven by decorating a bedroom with organic fabrics. Create a healthy sleeping environment by outfitting your bed with an organic cotton mattress that is free of stain-resistant and flame-retardant chemicals. If you have a neutral-hued space, add a pop of color with vibrantly hued organic cotton sheets and a coordinating comforter. A white comforter can be jazzed up with a patterned organic cotton throw blanket and matching decorative pillows.
